A Mensa é uma associação em que se integram as pessoas com qi muito elevado, em norma, com um qi acima de 98% da população mundial. CRITÉRIO DE ADMISSÃO NA MENSA

Só existe um critério para admissão na Mensa: Obter uma classificação num teste de Quociente de Inteligência, válido e devidamente supervisionado, que o coloque acima dos 98% da população mundial. 

No gráfico abaixo, que mostra a distribuição normal do Q.I. na população humana, é utilizada a escala de Wechsler, que possui um desvio-padrão (sigma) de 15 pontos de Q.I.. Outros valores de desvio-padrão são 16 para a escala Binet ou 24 para a escala Cattell. 

Dizer-se que um valor de Q.I. se situa acima de 98% da população mundial (também referido como "acima do percentil 98") é equivalente a afirmar-se que este se situa dois intervalos de desvio-padrão acima da média (100). Para admissão na Mensa, deve o candidato atingir num teste reconhecido e supervisionado um valor de Q.I. igual a 130 na escala de Wechsler (gráfico), o que é equivalente a 132 na escala de Binet ou 148 na escala Cattell. 

O teste mais utilizado pela Mensa Internacional para aplicação em países sem um grupo nacional instalado, é o teste de Matrizes Progressivas Avançadas de Raven e o resultado deste é geralmente apresentado na escala Cattell.
